An early demo of Lady Gaga’s new track 'Burqa' hit the Net last night. And as we know all too well, Gaga is no stranger to sparking up religious controversy with her music (see 'Judas'). Let's just say, we doubt Islamic folk will be twerking to 'Burqa' anytime soon! Last September, activists had reportedly planned to throw paint and faeces at the singer after she arrived at the Phillip Treacy show during London Fashion Week wearing a Burqa covered in raccoon tails. Religious groups took offence to it because they saw it as a clear insult to Muslims and Islam. And after the uproar, Gaga seems to have got inspired musically.
"I’m not a wandering slave, I am a woman of choice" she sings over the creepy guitar solo "My veil is protection for the gorgeousness of my face". On a lyrical tip, Gaga appears to be singing about how women aren't any less empowered by wearing a Burqa if they choose to. It puts emphasis on the veil not being an oppressive garment, but a representation of choice, as well as freedom of expression for Muslim women.
The track is a unique fusion of Middle Eastern influences and electronic beats. But that's not the only thing that differentiates the track from being a typical EDM number. The breakdowns dominate the verses instead of the chorus (not a fan of it to be honest). It's a bit weird. Gaga sounds really angry in the verses, which may have been intended but her vocals in the chorus are really outstanding.
It is yet to be confirmed whether 'Burqa' will appear on her upcoming new album 'ARTPOP' (due November 11th), but take a listen to Gaga making a statement with the song below:
