During a chat with Amanda Seales on the 'Small Doses' podcast, R&B singer Melanie Fiona claims music execs told her she spoke and sang too well to ever make it as a star. This was supposedly around the time she dropped her single, 'It Kills Me.' She claims that other women like Ashanti were promoted over her because Ashanti's music was more mainstream.
.This is actually quite baffling. Ashanti debuted almost a whole decade before Melanie released 'It Kills Me.' When she dropped that song, Ashanti had already peaked. At that point, Ashanti's star was beginning to fade and she was already starting to lose her popularity. She was no longer the IT girl of R&B. Melanie was unheard of when Ashanti was hot in her prime. So to suggest she was bypassed because Ashanti was more popular doesn't make sense. The timelines don't add up. Ashanti's ONLY competition during her IT girl era was Beyoncé. She was actually BIGGER than Beyoncé until those tables were turned. And if Melanie was going to go after another female's dominance for being commercial then it would have made more sense for her to name drop Beyoncé and Rihanna. Of course she wasn't going to do that because she knows their fans are cray cray especially Beyoncé's. She must be well aware that Keri Hilson actually survived to tell the tale and only just.

Ashanti had bops, however her live performances wasn't taking her to superstar status. I hated Beyonce "crazy in love" however when she performed it. She took it there & gave vocals, attitude & energy.
Her competition was Beyonce and Rihanna. Ashanti was dropping during that era. Why name names anyway? Personally, I always felt her music wasn't interesting enough.
