Listen: Rihanna's full version of Selena Gomez's 'Same Old Love.' ♫♫

Rihanna's full version of 'Same Old Love' recorded in 2014 has surfaced online.

The song, co-written by Charli XCX, Ross Golan, and its producers Stargate and Benny Blanco, was rejected by Ri before it eventually made its way to Selena Gomez’s 2015 album, 'Revival.' Only a 15 second snippet of Ri's version leaked in 2018. Rihanna does sound better than Karaoke singer Selena on that track, although Selena tried to make the song work to the best of her ability. Either way, I'm not a fan of the song. And it would not have been a good fit for 'ANTi,' so Ri was right to pass the ball.

Ri tweeted lyrics to the track in June 2014:

These Disney kids have no sense of direction when it comes to music. They just chase the hot producers & songwriter when their bubblegum sound dies down. It's like watching the same movie, over & over. Britney/X-Tina/N'Sync/JT/Miley/Selena!

I get that songs & beats get passed all the time to the highest bidder. Heatwave passed on Rock With You & then the late Great Rod Temperton(sp) gave it to Michael Jackson. So I get it!

Also, Charli XCX should've just kept the song for herself because I can clearly hear her outsinging homegirl in the background with her adlibs.

It's always fascinating to hear these unreleased demos and see how a song's journey changes depending on the artist! While Rihanna's version brings that distinct powerhouse vibe, passing it along was definitely the right move since it wouldn't have matched the artistic direction of ANTi. Seeing how a single track can be passed around, rejected, or transformed before finding its perfect fit really highlights how dynamic and unpredictable the music industry can be. Just like an artist looks for the perfect track that aligns with their personal style, professionals look for roles where their unique talents can shine. Thanks for sharing this cool piece of pop music history!
